Why I Want to Learn Japanese + Thoughts on the First Few Weeks of Japanese Class

My interest in learning Japanese stems from a constellation of personal interests, including a love of Japanese film, an interest in Japanese history, and a need to read Japanese-language scholarship on Chinese History, which is my primary field of study. Although we’re still quite early in the language-learning process - we’re currently just building a basically familiarity with writing systems and simple grammar patterns - I’m certainly looking forward to gradually building relationships and experiencing new media through Japanese. So far, there haven’t been too many major stumbling blocks, though grammar has gradually gotten more challenging as it becomes more complicated. In any case, I look forward to seeing what the future brings!

  1. Mackenzie-san, it is so interesting to know that your primary field of study is Chinese History, and also that reading the Japanese language is needed during the process - I have never thought! Also, I believe that your interest in the Japanese culture - film and history will definitely be a plus in learning the new language! Last but not least, I agree that the grammar is becoming more and more complicated and challenging so we all need to hang in there, and am also excited to see what the future brings!

  2. Hello, Mackenzie san. One of my best friends who is majored in Chinese also have to study Japanese to do further study. And after I read your blog, I guessed there might be amount of valuable historical materials written in Japanese about (ancient) China.
    But anyway,
Good luck on your major and Japanese study!

    1. Hey - thanks for your comment! Indeed, Japanese knowledge is surprisingly (but not unfortunately) important if one is to do responsible research on pre-modern China. Good luck to you as well!
